Weather, condition update, February 8, 2014:IMG_2991

The condition in the Alps are improving, few storms in the last 3 days and more coming. The snowpack is also improving. so the ski touring forecast is looking much better

The winter season is upon us and we have many ski tours on the calendar, like the Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt or the Berner Oberland ski traverse.

I will be touring near Aspen during January. So don’t hesitate to contact me and make plan for your next adventure

Keep scrolling down and read the “important news” about Matterhorn closure, Patrouille des glaciers ski mountaineering race.

See you soon –  Jean

Important News:

This coming winter there will be the “Patrouille des Glaciers” The famous ski mountaineering race between Zermatt and Verbier along the haute route. April 29 – May 5, 2014. I will not recommend planning the Haute route ski traverse between Verbier – Zermatt between April 20 until May 7 as there will be a lot of traffic. Military unit preparing the course and staying at the huts.

Matterhorn 2014:  The commune of Zermatt has plan to remodel the “Hornli/Belverder hut” at the base of the Matterhorn. They decided to close the hut for the entire summer  2014 season. So if you are planning to climb the Matterhorn in 2014 , few options are available. Camping near the hut ( not very comfortable with limted space and very noisy. helicopter working on construction) or start from Schwarzee which will ad an additional 2 hours (700 meters vertical) to the climb. Or climb the ” Arete du Lion” from Italy, check the condition as an rock fall last year change the access to the Carrell hut.

Winter Schedule:

  • Chamonix – Zermatt Haute Route: Click here for detail information, price and dates.
  • Berner Oberland Ski Traverse: Click here for detail information, price and dates.

Over the years i have guided the Seven summits, all the majors peaks in the Alps, in New Zealand and more. I have ski tours in places like Japan, Canada, South America, Africa, and of course all over the Alps. I enjoy trekking and over the last 5 years have organize trek from Chamonix to Zermatt (walker’s and glacier haute route) Around the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc, I trek in Nepal, Chile, Peru.
