
ADVANCED MOUNTAINEERING COURSE
Course Overview
This course is designed for intermediate and advanced climber wishing to improve their skills in all aspects of
snow and ice climbing, rock climbing, glacier travel and general mountaineering. This course can serves as a
platform for more technical climbs.
This course take place in the Valley of Saas, Switzerland at the Almageller hut. A perfect location for such course.
Easy access and plenty of options, great rock climbing all around the hut and many peaks to apply all the
techniques learn.
Course Objectives
Increasing technical knowledge/skills in all aspects of snow, ice, rock and alpine climbing including:
Leading climbs, planning and application.
Glacier travel, Crevasse rescue, Cramponing, Self arrest
Ice climbing, anchors, Piolets tractions.
Rope, knots, rock gear/belay techniques, Rappelling, Safe climbing, rescue techniques
Developing educated, self-reliant climbers with the ability to evaluate the conditions and make decisions,
including:
Route finding, navigation, Weather, Glacier conditions
Gear evaluations
Hazards evaluation, risk management, Critical decision-making
Great course to attend before climbing the Matterhorn, See Matterhorn option.
Physical Conditioning
In the best interest of personal safety, success and team compatibility. Adequate training and excellent physical
condition is required. We will not carry any heavy pack as the team is base out of a hut that provide dinner,
breakfast and Lodging.
ITINERARY:
Day 1: Sunday. Afternoong Meeting in Sass Fee, Hotel. (very accessible from Geneva, Zurich in the Rhone
valley). Review gear , conditions, plan of the week.
Day 2: Walk to the Almageller hut, afternoon spend reviewing knots, rope management, belay techniques.
Evening Lecture about leading, keeping in mind the big picture while focusing on the task at hand.
Day 3: Ascent and traverse of the Dri Hornli ridge. A great day with so many opportunities. Alpine rock climbing,
down climbing, rappelling, short roping on great granit.
Evening lecture: route planning.
Day 4: rock climbing.: a few feet from the hut in the face of the Dri Hornli, many routes allow us to work on
movement skills, then continue up as you practice, belaying, placing protections, leading. Descent include route
finding, risk management.
Evening lecture: planning of the next day climb
Day 5: Ascent and traverse of Weimeiss, 4100m. a perfect alpine climb combining, snow, ice and rock. Plenty of
short roping, glacier travel.
Day 6: Second summit: Application of all the techniques. From the Hoohsaas hut. Return to the valley at the end
of the day with the lift. End of course.
